Poor MCC (mucociliary clearance) of the upper respiratory tract leads to mucus pooling within the middle ear cleft, nose and paranasal sinuses. This results in a high incidence of otitis media with effusion (46–86% of patients), hearing loss (25–36%) and nasal discharge or blockage (76–88%). Where one would normally expect resolution of glue ear and nasal discharge in an otherwise healthy child by 8years, symptoms in PCD children persist longer and not infrequently into adulthood.
